Benefits and unwanted effects
Medicine safety assessment considers benefits and harms rather than usefulness alone. In the United States, FDA review includes evidence from animal studies and human clinical trials. Review asks whether a treatment helps the intended condition and what unwanted effects occur. An effective medicine is not automatically free of risk. Considering both sides supports informed use, while individual health circumstances can affect how those benefits and risks apply to a person.
Manufacturing and labels
Safety also depends on manufacturing and labeling. Manufacturing relates to the product supplied; labels communicate information about correct use and precautions. Prescription and nonprescription products are part of safety oversight. Being available without a prescription does not make instructions irrelevant. A medicine needs both appropriate product quality and appropriate use, so reviewing clinical evidence is only one part of the overall process of reducing medicine-related harm.
